Bpost opens new distribution centre tailored to parcel delivery
Bpost has opened a new distribution centre in Maldegem. The site has been fully designed to meet the needs of a modern parcel delivery company and will be used to distribute 3,000 parcels a day in the region. Over the past year, Bpost has already put three of these new or refurbished distribution centres into operation.
Bpost’s activities are undergoing rapid transformation. Over the past year, the company has seen letter volumes in Belgium fall by 14%. At the same time, parcel volumes have reached record highs of up to 829,000 items per day. This shift has implications for Bpost’s 149 distribution centres, which cannot always be adapted to the new reality. The same situation arose at the centres in Aalter and Maldegem.
7,930 m² site
Bpost therefore built a new distribution centre in the region in just nine months, tailored to the needs of a modern parcel delivery company. An industrial site on Roterij in Maldegem proved to be the most suitable location. Starting on 28 September, 39 postal workers will be based at the site. Every day, they will set out from there with around 3,000 parcels destined for the municipalities of Aalter, Sint-Laureins and, of course, Maldegem itself.
The postal workers will be able to prepare their rounds in optimal conditions and sort parcels in a modern 2,000-square-metre hall. The building also has a parking area with loading and unloading zones covering more than 5,000 square metres, spread across three floors. Forty-four charging stations allow postal workers to charge their electric delivery vans and electric bicycles at any time.

With the construction of the distribution centre in Maldegem, Bpost continues to invest in its future as a logistics player in the parcel market. Over the past twelve months, the company has already put three new distribution centres into operation, including two new-build projects and one refurbishment project:
- Charleroi: newly built facility of 6,350 m²
- Sint-Niklaas: renovation project covering 3,186 m²
- Maldegem: newly built facility of 7,930 m²
620 solar panels
Bpost's new building has also been designed to be energy-neutral. The roof is equipped with 620 solar panels, which cover the site’s entire electricity consumption. As a result, Bpost will save 218 tonnes of CO₂ annually compared with the former sites in Aalter and Maldegem.

The building also uses smart lighting and energy-efficient cooling technologies such as free cooling. Rainwater is collected and reused for sanitary facilities, while a sorting and recycling plan helps minimise waste. These efforts are part of Bpost’s ambition to become a carbon-neutral company by 2050.
Note to the press: A distribution centre is not a post office. Postal workers set out from a distribution centre to carry out their rounds. The site is not open to the public. The post offices in Maldegem and Aalter will remain where they are.
